Office Water Coolers – Cutting Down On the Occasional Chit-Chat

Believe it or not, but you and your employees, well, at least some of them, have a different perception of office water coolers. You get these coolers to ensure that the employees can drink filtered water as and when they want. And all they see is an opportunity – the opportunity to gather around and talk. Yes, the water cooler effect* is a common phenomenon and chances are that your office is no exception. Of course, it may not be possible for you to stop the chit-chat completely, not that you should, but that’s another story. You can try and reduce it to a level where it does not hamper the productivity.

Usually, when the bottles are replaced, the employees tend to stay a bit longer near the office water coolers. What if there are no bottles? Won’t they just go there, drink water and come back? They are likely to. Interestingly, such coolers are available. Even better, they have many more benefits than just helping you cut down on the chit-chat your employees engage in. For instance, they are designed for an enhanced user experience and require no admin intervention, whatsoever. Likewise, unlike bottles, they dispense freshly filtered water.

Other benefits include:

  • Automatic refilling
  • Easy maintenance
  •    o You can opt for service packages, if the need be
  • Need a simple mains water connection
  •    o No other prerequisites as such

And yes, with office water coolers, you can keep your employees hydrated**, making them more productive. Who knows, with less chit-chat and more productivity, you may be in a win-win situation.

You May Not Be Holding a Glass of Filtered Water

Just because you see a water filter at your office, doesn't mean the glass of water you are about to have, is safe for consumption. It may not be. That's because most of the filters merely perform sediment filtration, removing dirt that usually gets mixed with water if it reaches your office through old pipes. However, that's not enough. Water has many more impurities that must be removed before you drink it. Take for example, metals. Sometimes, water may contain nickel, chromium and the like. These are of course, not good for health. Likewise, microorganisms, if any, must be controlled.

Not Filtered Water

Does the filter at your office do that? If that's a no, are you really drinking filtered water? To top it all, even if dirt, metals and other such impurities are removed, the water may still not be fit for consumption. This might happen if the water dispensed by the filter contains chemicals and gases. Even worse, if chlorine or chlorine by-products are present, you are at greater risk. One thing's clear: you need to ensure that the filter has a multi-stage filtration process so that you don't have to think twice before drinking that glass of water, which you may still be holding.

Don't drink it and rather ask the concerned person at your office to get a new filter, one that supports sediment filtration. While you are at it, you may also tell them to take activated carbon filtration into consideration. However, to get rid of metals, the system should also have some kind of purity redox media. Only when all these things are present, you can expect to get water that tastes great, doesn't lose its minerals and is free of impurities.

Water Coolers - Selecting the Best Type

Safe drinking water is very important for any person. Bottled water thus becomes very popular as it ensures filtered water. But since these bottles are very expensive and not available in abundance, water coolers were invented to provide cool filtered water to the people. These coolers have now become a very basic part of our life. It can be found in every house or office. It has become a very popular electronic appliance that is a must for any place where humans reside or work.

The two variants of this product available in the market are- the portable water cooler and the bottle-less water cooler. The first type is often used at home or small organisations while the second one is preferred where many people work or live.

The portable water coolers can be used at any place where there is an electric source to plug the cooler. It is generally featured with two faucets- one for hot water and one for cold water. This water cooler uses a large bottle of water as its water supply source. It is very apt for a place where plumbing cannot be carried out.

Despite the convenience and safety features, there are some issues involved as well. Firstly, the buyer has to consider the budget involved in purchasing the bottled water. Moreover, a storage space for water bottles has also to be maintained. Lifting of the water bottles is another issue.

On the other hand, the bottle-less water coolers or the plumbed coolers are connected to the main water supply. Water passes through a filtering system before reaching the cooler. There is an unlimited supply of water in this case. It is quite effective and cheaper for large organisations and canteens where the water requirement is quite large. There is no problem of lifting or ordering the bottles periodically.

But this type of cooler lacks flexibility and has a plumbing requirement. It is not apt in cases where the water requirement is not much.

"Thus, it is important to make a right choice of water cooler depending upon the water requirements. Both the forms of water coolers have their own pros and cons."
